DHEA-Sulphate (DHEA-S)
An adrenal hormone that acts as a precursor to both testosterone and oestrogen. It declines steadily from the mid-twenties, so a result is read against age rather than a single adult range.
DHEA-Sulphate in the Biomarker Guide — what it is, why it is tested, and what moves the number.
Add-on markers can only be added to venous samples.
Timing
Take in the morning, alongside the other hormones. No fasting needed. DHEA-S is far steadier through the day than cortisol or testosterone, so an afternoon sample is not a wasted one.
Turnaround: the lab reports this test within 24 hours of receiving your sample, counted in working days. Most samples reach them within about 3 days of posting. Full detail on our Turnaround Times page.
